A lot can change in a year. From the laws governing additional rent increases to the new methods of service and deposit return, the pandemic, and summer wildfires. The management of a residential rental building has witnessed a lot of changes in 2021, and this session has been created to provide insight into the ramifications. Join this highly knowledgeable and experienced panel in a “he said / she said / they said” workshop which will review the recent changes at the Residential Tenancy Branch, and help you manage them.

Lisa Mackie Partner, Alexander Holburn Beaudin + Lang LLP

Lisa Mackie is the leader of the Strata Property Practice Group and a member of the firm’s Insurance and Real Estate Practices. Her primary areas of practice are Strata Property Law and Residential Tenancy Law.

At Alexander Holburn, Lisa was the 2019/ 2020 chair of the Women’s Forum, a group dedicated to promoting business development and networking opportunities among our female lawyers, paralegals and female clients. Prior to joining Alexander Holburn, Lisa worked in the law reform field as a legal researcher with the British Columbia Law Institute and the Canadian Centre for Elder Law Studies.

 

 

 

 

Phil Dougan Lawyer, Citadel Law Corporation

Phil loves to be a teacher when he can. He is involved with the Canadian Condominium Institute as a board member and speaker at CCI seminars. Three or four times a year, Phil also teaches an eight-week course at Vancouver Community College called “Law and Tenant Relations” for students training to be building managers.

 

 

 

 

Al Kemp President, A.G. Kemp & Associates Inc.

Owner and President of A. G. Kemp & Associates Inc., Al Kemp was CEO of the Rental Owners and Managers Society of BC from 1997 to 2013, leading the building of that organization from a small association of primarily Victoria landlords to a BC wide organization of over 2400 owners and managers of rental properties, known for its high quality services and education. Al was also a major contributor to the current Residential and Manufactured Home Park Tenancy Acts. Under his leadership, ROMS BC won the Victoria Chamber of Commerce “Outstanding Customer Service Award” in 2010.

His prior careers include 15 years as Vice President, Property Management with BC Buildings Corporation, Human Resources and Plant Services Manager for Suncor Inc., Fort McMurray, and peace officer with the RCMP in Ontario and BC.

In his current role since 2013, Al and his colleague, Carly Jellis, provide legal information, education, operational advice, and assistance to property management and ownership companies who are rental housing providers. He is also Executive Director of the Manufactured Home Park Owners Alliance of BC, an organization of over 350 manufactured home community owners throughout BC.
